Breast Augmentation

A Shapely Silhouette with Breast Implants

When it comes to appearances, one of the main concerns for women is their breast size. Women who have particularly small breasts may find it difficult to find well-fitting clothes or bathing suits, and may experience negative feelings regarding the size of their breasts. At the Center for Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, Drs. Scott Loessin and Jeffrey DeMercurio offer breast augmentation surgery as an option for patients who wish to have larger, yet natural-looking breasts. As experienced cosmetic surgeons, Drs. Loessin and DeMercurio have helped hundreds of patients achieve an ideal silhouette through breast augmentation surgery. Patients who are interested in learning more about breast augmentation are encouraged to contact our office to schedule a consultation.

Types of Breast Implants

Before undergoing breast augmentation surgery, patients must make several decisions that will influence the outcome of the procedure. In addition to choosing a size for their breasts, patients have the option of saline implants or silicone implants. Each type of implant offers its own unique benefits and risks. Saline implants are comprised mostly of saltwater and have a natural, soft texture. These implants are a safe option for patients, because in the rare event that they rupture, their contents are easily absorbed by the body. One disadvantage of saline implants, however, is that folds and creases in the implants are more likely to become apparent than with their silicone counterparts. Silicone implants are made of a thick gel, as opposed to saltwater. These implants tend to best mimic the look and feel of natural breasts, and rarely show signs of rippling. While silicone implants are less likely to rupture than saline implants, when ruptures do occur, they are more difficult to detect. The type of implant that a patient receives will depend on a number of factors including health history, aesthetic goals, and personal preferences. Drs. Loessin and DeMercurio will discuss the best options for treatment in a pre-surgery consultation.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about one hour. During surgery, Dr. Loessin or Dr. DeMercurio will first make an incision to gain access to the breast tissue. This incision can either be made on the underside of the breast, around the nipple, or under the arm. The placement and size of the incision varies based on the individual goals of the patient. After the incision is made, our surgeon will begin the placement of the implant. Implants can either be placed in front of, or behind the pectoral muscle. Once again, the surgeon will decide where to put the implant based on his expertise and the patient’s needs. After this is done, the incision is closed with sutures and the surgery is complete.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery offers a number of cosmetic benefits to patients who are unhappy with their breast size. First, the procedure can help instill confidence in patients who have previously experienced self-doubt in relation to their breast size. A natural-looking increase in breast size can help patients feel more comfortable with the shape of their body. Breast implants also provide balance among the rest of a patient’s features, drastically improving the silhouette. Finally, breast augmentation surgery can add volume and shape to the breasts, making it a welcome option for patients who have experienced the effects of aging or pregnancy.
